Loose Leash Walking Mini Course

Reactivty Reboot

REACTIVITY REBOOT 1 & 2

Reactivity Reboot I & II.png

Are your dog walks frequently interrupted by barking and lunging episodes while on leash? Ever been driven bananas by a dog barking out of the window or across a fence? Does your dog bark at new people, other dogs, cars, squirrels, or any other common place things in their environment?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you likely have first hand experience with a reactive dog, or own one currently. Reactivity is a broad term, and can encompass an extremely wide range of behaviors and causes. Reactivity can have vastly different core problems, from overexcitement to fearfulness, depending on the dog. Because of this, reactivity rehabilitation work often requires customized and often long term training. No two reactive dogs are exactly the same, so it is important to understand where the reactivity is coming from and the factors involved in order to effectively address the issue in the long term.

During this class, we will dive deeply into what reactivity is, the different types of reactivity, what can create reactivity, and approaches that we can take to address it.

Reactivity is a complex topic, and through a deeper understanding, owners can begin to meet their dogs' needs and find solutions that improve their dog's emotional well being, their dog's general health, and their relationship with their dog.

This is a JUDGEMENT FREE class. Owning a reactive dog can feel stressful, embarrassing, and even scary. If you are experiencing reactivity with your dog, this is not a reflection on your character or your qualifications as a dog owner. Through this class, you will receive support and new strategies to find what works best for you and your dog. Our approach is not one size fits all, and will be individualized to meet your specific needs. You will also have the opportunity to connect with others struggling with similar issues!

Registrants that are accepted into Working Spots will be invited to bring their dogs. We will introduce exercises specific to where each dog is in their training journey, and to demonstrate the variety of approaches that we recommend based on the individual dog. Participants that register for Auditing Spots will be in the perfect position to watch and learn, and will leave with many new tools that they can work on with their dogs at home!

Note that each dog will be set up for success based on where they are in their training journey. This class will run seminar style, meaning that dogs will take turns in the training room or work in small groups, depending on their current training goals and their needs. Some dogs will work for very short sessions and others for longer, based on what will serve each dog best. We are looking for quality of training time, rather than quantity.

Off Leash Obedience

OFF LEASH OBEDIENCE COURSES

Off Leash Obedience.png

When most people think “off leash obedience,” they picture outdoor galivants, puppy play dates, and off lead hiking adventures. This course will help prepare for safe and reliable experiences in all of those areas, however, off-leash obedience is also essential for reliable behavior loose in the home, in fenced areas, and in emergency situations. If you strive for better manners in your home and during social situations, to create the highest degree of safety for your dog, and for carefree off-leash freedom outdoors, this is the program for you!

Help your dog live their best life by giving them the gift of bombproof off-leash obedience skills!

**Please note that these courses are best taken as a progression. Even if you have done previous off-leash work, the foundations class will include drills, exercised, and approaches that will add to your previous skillset, and will be instrumental during the Intermediate and Advanced courses. If you have not completed significant previous obedience work with your dog, we strongly recommend beginning with our "Bombproof Base Training" course before registering for this specialized program.**

FOUNDATIONS
MAY CLASS | $225

Wednesdays | 5:15pm - 6:15pm

5/24, 5/31, 6/7, & 6/14

Excellent off leash obedience begins with a strong foundation. Our Foundations of Off Leash Obedience course will coach you through building fundamental skills needed to build strong handler focus, motivation in training, and an effective communication system that will be instrumental in navigating the Intermediate and Advanced levels.

The number one mistake that owners make when working towards off-leash obedience is losing the leash too early! Believe it or not, strong off-leash obedience is first built ON leash. During this course, your trainer will guide you through teaching your dog a strong recall and improve reliability in static behaviors (such as place, sit, and down) with the leash in the picture, building precision in behavior BEFORE losing the leash to ensure that off-leash training is safe and effective.

The stronger your dog's on-leash fundamentals, the better your off-leash reliability will be! This course is a fantastic springboard for future off-leash excellence, and engineered to flow perfectly into our Intermediate Off Leash Obedience course.

This is the class for you if:

  • You want to build strong off-leash foundations for use both outdoors and inside of your home.
    * You want to prepare for safer off-leash experiences outdoors.
    * You want to be able to have reliable behavior from your dog when guests come to your house.
    * You want to use recall to address problem behaviors such as counter surfing, barking out of windows, chasing wildlife, and more!

NOTE: If your dog does not have moderate to strong basic obedience skills, we recommend registering for the Bomb Proof Base Training course prior to registering for this course in order to get the most benefit from the class. This specialized course is short, and will not cover learning theory, food/toy work, and pressure work as comprehensively as our Base Training course, but these skills will be regularly utilized during this course.

INTERMEDIATE
JUNE CLASS | $225

Wednesdays | 5:15pm - 6:15pm

6/21, 6/28, 7/5, & 7/19

This course will continue to build on the skills established during the fundamentals course. We will begin introducing off-leash work indoors in a controlled environment and proper longline and/or flexi-lead work.

During this course, we will discuss the use of electronic collars as a communication and safety device, though their use is not required for participation in this class.

This is the class for you if:

  • You want to build strong off-leash foundations for use both outdoors and inside of your home.

  • You have already completed significant previous obedience coursework or the Fundamentals of Off Leash Obedience course.

  • Your dog has a strong understanding of leash pressure as a communication system and a strong marker and reward system in place.

Note: Existing clients who have completed other coursework with Summit K9 or equivalent training work with another training program may be admitted into the Intermediate course at the instructor’s discretion.

ADVANCED
JULY/AUGUST CLASS | $225

Wednesdays | 5:15pm - 6:15pm

7/26, 8/2, 8/9, 8/16

This class will introduce advanced off leash obedience skills and begin to fade the use of long lines and flexi-leads. We will begin to transition the skills built in the Foundations and Intermediate classes to real world situations and higher levels of difficulty and distraction.

At Summit K9, we recommend the use of electronic collars for all dogs that are participating in off-leash work in uncontained public spaces as a safety precaution. This course will heavily feature teaching e-collar fluency in its instruction, and is not recommended for participants who are not interested in learning about this tool. Dogs not trained on the e-collar will not be permitted to be taken fully off-leash outside of the facility during the course, as this violates Summit K9 safety protocols.

This is the class for you if:

  • You are interested in creating super reliable off leash obedience both outdoors and inside of the home, even under a high level of distraction.

  • You have already completed extensive obedience work with your dog and your dog has strong recall skills on a longline and/or leash, but still requires some proofing or improvement.

  • You are open to learning about e-collar use to provide safe and reliable off leash experiences for your dog.

Note: Clients who have completed significant previous coursework or have already introduced e-collar work are invited to participate in this class and will be accepted at the discretion of the instructor.

Loose Leash Walking

LOOSE LEASH WALKING
MINI COURSE

Loose Leash Walking.png

3 Classes | $200
TUESDAYS | 6:30pm - 7:30pm
MAY CLASS 5/9, 5/16, 5/23

Join us for this intensive mini course for those seeking to create the perfect loose leash walk!

Aside from making your walks more enjoyable, establishing excellent loose leash walking skills will improve your overall relationship with your dog. Moving together without conflict and frustration creates a strong sense of partnership between the dog and handler and taps into the fundamental nature of the dog to move as a cohesive pack. By creating a strong loose leash walk, you establish a fundamental building block of their training relationship, which carries over into other areas of training and coexisting with your pup.

During this short course, we will cover how to communicate effectively through the leash, how to improve clarity when using rewards, how to format your walk to create the perfect balance between structure and freedom, and more!

This is the class for you if:

  • Your dog pulls or is highly distracted on walks.

  • Your dog walks nicely on leash sometimes, but is inconsistent and loses focus in the presence of distractions or competing motivators.

  • You have completed previous obedience training with your dog and/or have established foundation training with your dog (i.e. your dog knows some basic commands such as sit, down, and come and will respond somewhat reliably).

  • Your dog is non-reactive or only mildly reactive. Moderately to severely reactive dogs should enroll in the Reactivity Reboot class, which will cover loose leash walking for reactive dogs!

NOTE: If your dog does not have moderate to strong basic obedience skills, we recommend registering for the Bomb Proof Base Training course prior to registering for a mini-course in order to get the most benefit from the class. Mini courses are short, and will not cover learning theory, food/toy work, and pressure work as comprehensively as our Base Training course, but these skills will be regularly utilized during this course.
